MACLEC Mint Group

Pioneering SHK Turbine Technology Suitable for Generation & Storage of Energy

Provider of the only SHK Turbines globally

Can store energy without any chemical/fuel Standard size, deployable anywhere, globally

Generate Hydrokinetic Power From any running stream globally

Solution Concept

SHK-EMU is a close-loop energy storage capable to hold surplus power as potential energy in terms of water pumped to its upper reservoir.

For power supply, the stored water gets channelised through low gradient high velocity canals fitted with SHK Turbines and generated power then fed to the grid with more than 85% round trip efficiency. The discharged water gets accumulated in the lower reservoir using the gravity and gets recirculated in the next charge-discharge cycle.

SHK-EMU can act as giant battery for Post generation energy storage and play key role in transition towards carbon-neutral economy.

By storing this excess electricity in SHK-EMU, utilities can manage peak energy demand while decrease their individual carbon footprint considerably.

SHK-EMU also provide ancillary benefits such as firming capacity and reserves (both incremental and decremental), reactive power, black start capability, and spinning reserves which makes it perfectly suitable and relevant for the challenge selected.

Market Opportunity

As most renewable energy generation globally is of intermittent, it is mandatory for all existing and upcoming solar and wind generators to add storage capacities for supplying firm power during peak demand hours.

MACLEC is getting early traction from large energy CPSUs globally for SHK-EMU which establish its relevance in present global energy transition.

The global post generation energy storage market size is projected to surpass around US$ 435.32 billion by 2030 and growing at a CAGR of 8.4% from 2022 to 2030 which makes SHK-EMU a billion-dollar worthy Unicorn Venture.

MACLEC is planning to establish a gigawatt factory for bulk production of SHKEMU to capture at least 10% Global Energy storage market in next 5 years.

While all utilities are struggling to secure supply of batteries as well as to complete formalities for traditional pump storage projects, MACLEC’s SHK Turbines are already in operation since 2020 and completed all trials, scale-up R&D, regulatory approvals and ready to be deployed as close-loop energy storage.

The Technology Advantage

SHK-EMU is very low tech, globally deployable bulk energy storage system which is based upon SHK technology.

The SHK-Turbines are 100% indigenously invented in 2013, patent-granted in 2020 & successfully in operation, designed, developed, manufactured in India which make it low cost in production and simple in O&M.

Developed countries can immediate deploy it for its own use followed by supplying to other utilities under BOOT or EPC+AMC mode jointly with MACLEC.

Due to its geographical independence, the SHK-EMU can be deployed in any existing pond/non-hydro-powered dam/reservoirs/holding tanks/waste water treatment facilities/etc. without any major civil/structural changes.

To utilise the coastal zones, SHK-EMU can be deployed just next to the ocean by constructing only one upper reservoir and utilising ocean itself as lower reservoir.

With this huge scope in Developed countries and globally, SHK-EMU can enrich its Investor’s strategic value and providing a significant edge over its competitors to dominate Energy Storage Segment.

Product Advantage

The batteries and traditional pump storage cannot supply power during charging. But SHK-EMU can anytime supply the firm power, even while charging because the charging medium (water pumps) is separate then power generating turbines. Due to this advantage, SHK-EMU can operate in continuous charge-discharge mode and can perform more than 2 use cycles/day. This advantage further enhances the overall capacity utilisation factor and increases the overall project revenue stream.

With local partners, MACLEC planning to produce SHK-EMU 100% indigenously as self-contained, prefabricated/pre-caste kit, deployable in any capacity, capable to operate using any liquid (fresh/sea/wastewater, etc.) at anywhere
The SHK-EMU storage can perform unlimited use cycles for >35 years, at just 3% of the CAPEX as O&M and each establishment can give a very long term profitable business with more than 18% IRR.

Product Readiness

Invented by the founders as childhood hobby project, the SHK Turbines was piloted and tested by IIT Roorkee-ONGC Energy Centre jointly in 2014-16 at Ramganga River (Uttarakhand) and begins its journey for commercialisation
After 65+ field trials, lab tests, CFD and hydrodynamic calculations, SHK Turbine technology commercialised and running successfully at a micro irrigation canal of Jim Corbett, Uttarakhand.
In March-2020, Honourable PMO-India recommended SHK Turbines to MoP which constituted a high level “committee to study the concept & commercial applications of Hydrokinetic-turbines developed by MACLEC” headed by Member-Power and chaired by NTPC, BBMB, NHPC, THDC, etc. The Committee reviewed, techno-commercially evaluated and verified the technology and based upon their report, MoP recommended SHK Turbines to all CPSUs for deployment in Oct 2021.
In a decade long commercialization journey, MACLEC has established in-house capabilities, indigenous supply-chain and its trusted collaborators to quickly customise & rapidly manufacture turbines for megawatt scale deployment.

Evidence for Market Validation

MACLEC completed field trials b/w 2014-2015 with HRED-IITR and ONGC Energy Centre.

From 2016 to 2018, the Scale-up R&D was conducted in dedicated labs, field trials in natural streams/canals followed by CFD validation.

From 2019 to 2020, a commercial demo project have been deployed at upper Ganges canal. From 2021 onwards MACLEC has a commercial deployment at Jim Corbett national park running successfully.

SHK Turbines are WWF’s climate solver Awardee (2018), Best global green business idea by European-Union (2019), X-factor invention of Earth by NASA (2020), Solution for SDG Goals Award by BRICS (2021), Grass-root Tech for SDG-7 by UNDP, etc.
